## Board development & governance

### Why is this important?

When setting up a nonprofit, board development and governance are critical to provide strategic direction, oversight, and accountability. A well-structured board brings diverse expertise, ensures compliance with legal and fiduciary responsibilities, and supports fundraising and stakeholder engagement. Strong governance practices help maintain transparency, manage risks, and make informed decisions that align with the nonprofit’s mission and values. Together, they establish a solid foundation for effective leadership and long-term organizational success.
